GREETINGS FROM VERMONT!

In a series of hikes from 2021-2022, Kenseth has undertaken hiking all 272 miles of Vermont’s Long Trail end-to-end.

The Long Trail is the oldest long distance trail in the United States, running across the entirety of Vermont along the ridgeline of the Green Mountains from Williamstown, MA, to the Canadian border. GREETINGS FROM VERMONT! represents selections from section hikes in 2021 covering the first 135 miles of trail.

Hiking the Long Trail defies visual contextualization: in the moment, the trail repudiates negotiation. Rarely flat and often muddy, a network of “trail soup,” stone staircases, viewless summits, and overgrown vistas define the approach to the Appalachian Gap. Only upon putting some miles between oneself and that alliterative landscape can processing of the seeming chaos begin.

This exhibition mimics that chaos; forced juxtapositions define recurrent themes from within the green tunnel, arranged in a gift shop-esque display that further transposes the sublime to the quotidien.
